“XE” is a work by Lara Boubeta Bamio, with illustrations by Sara Valcárcel, and it explores themes of freedom and the right to express one’s true self.
The story revolves around the character Xe, who is portrayed as a figure of mystery—neither exclusively a boy nor a girl. Through this narrative, the author and illustrator shed light on the importance of breaking free from societal norms and expectations, and embracing one’s own identity. By doing so, the work aims to support the quest for personal freedom and identity. The book serves as a representation of the struggles and experiences of intersex individuals, seeking to create a safe and inclusive space where diversity can be acknowledged and discussed from an early age.
Editorial Galaxia published “XE”, a hymn to diversity. “XE”, is an album by Lara Boubeta Bamio, illustrated by Sara Valcárcel, which talks about freedom, about the right to be the person we truly want to be. Un libro que busca crear un espacio seguro en el que visibilizar y acercar la diversidad desde las edades más tempranas. In this book, dedicated to childhood, the main character, Xe, is a boy or a girl, who knows? A mystery for all humanity. Through this story, the author and illustrator expose the need to escape from the social canon, from what is politically correct, to find one’s essence. This work represents the search for freedom and, above all, personal identity. An identity that escapes social mandates or expectations, and that embraces one’s individual feelings. Xe is an example of retribution and exposure of intersex people’s reality. A book that seeks to create a safe space to make diversity visible and closer from the earliest ages. A place to generate debate and ask questions.
